For over 20 years, Howard University Law Alumni Association (HULAA) Past President Donald Thigpen and other members of HULAA and their family and friends travelled to Martha Vineyard on an annual basis to fellowship and network during the latter part of August.
Bison on the Vineyard builds on the long history of African Americans, including Howard alumni, summering in the Oak Bluffs Section of the Vineyard. In early 2010, Margo Bouchet a member of both HULAA and the Howard University Alumni Association (HUAA) suggested that the HUAA collaborate with HULAA to jointly plan and sponsor the annual BOV festivities.
Under the administrations and leadership of both HUAA Past President Kim Singleton and HULAA Past President Kevin Judd, Margo’s call to action to create a partnership was formalized in 2010.
Through 2013, HUAA partnered with HULAA to program five exciting annual BOV events. However, due to concern that the late August timing – coinciding with the start of the school year in many parts of the country – was a barrier to greater participation, HUAA is planning an early August BOV event to accommodate more of the HU family.
HULAA will continue the late August tradition begun over 20 years ago with the goal to maintain and grow participation.
